Overnight in Honfleur, with its unique character and atmosphere that has inspired painters, writers, and musicians over the ages. Nestled at the mouth of the Seine River and preserved from World War II’s destruction, this quaint, old Norman town has managed to retain its charm of yesteryear. The “Old Dock,” narrow jetty houses, museums, and monuments are witness to a rich heritage of art and history.

Day Four | Sunday, September 11, 2022

A walled city on the English Channel, St-Malo suffered widespread destruction during the bombings of World War II, but has since been lovingly restored to its 17th- and 18th-century splendor. The city’s top destination is the citadel, from whence the Corsairs once raided enemy ships in the name of the King. The nearby tidal island and Benedictine abbey of Mont St-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and pilgrimage destination for religious travelers.

The busy agricultural port of La Coruña is well known for its gardens and churches, such as the fragrant Gardens of San Carlos in the Old City and the church of Calle de Santa Maria with its intricately carved doorway. Yet, the city’s most iconic symbol is the staggering Tower of Hercules. Marvel at this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has been standing since the 1st century A.D. and continues to aid ships in navigating the Spanish coast to this day.

Built along the hillsides overlooking the mouth of the Douro River, Oporto’s charming urban landscape features many and varied monuments, grand churches, and winding medieval streets. After taking the opportunity to meander along the river in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ribeira, relax and enjoy a glass of sweet port wine in the warm Portuguese sunshine.
